Yakuza seems like a game I will probably enjoy, but I recently got done with Yakuza 0 and 6 so I wanted to take a small break before diving back into those games, so I will probably play it in the future.

Really this series is a phenomenal turn-based series, one of if not the best, and people on the subreddit are so incredibly helpful, friendly, and passionate about the game that I'd recommend asking them or checking threads there on how to dive in. This is the one that got me hooked and then made me go replay some of the older ones (which I now like more). I'd played a lot of the FE games before and thought they were fun, but never cared enough to finish one. If you were thinking of getting into the Fire Emblem series, I think Fire Emblem Awakening is a fantastic entry point. It has terrible low-budget English voice acting that might trick you into thinking this is a low-budget game (you can just switch to the Japanese VA at any time), but apart from that, every element of the game is put together really well it's a highly polished game with a lot to do and explore and experiment with. If you like story / worldbuilding a lot, I'd recommend playing the first real game in the series Koudelka or just watching a summary (I think this 13 minute one is great)Īrc Rise Fantasia is a hidden gem, and imo a masterpiece in many ways like worldbuilding, customization, challenging turn-based combat that never stops being engaging even when you're 90% done with the game. The turn-based combat system and the judgment ring system were also a really fresh take as well. Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant really unique JRPG's imo, that are dark without trying too hard to be edgy, really great memorable characters and an awesome setting (the real world + demons) where you get to travel to France, Wales, Russia, and so on. Imo they're the SMT games with some of the best characters and story, really well-explored themes and just really show off the "golden age" of Shin Megami Tensei well. I can't recommend Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 (duology / immediate sequel situation). So I see that you like Shin Megami Tensei ("SMT") and you don't mind emulating, that's a big part of what I'm basing my recommendations on: And although there are returning characters the stories are not directly related, so you can play them out of order. One neat thing is that even the first games being from PS1 you can import saves, so you can actually use your main character from the first game in the seccond one and both main characters have a combo attack together. The games also have war battles that are kinda like fire emblem and your characters can actually die. You recruit 108 characters in each game, and everyone has a part to play, either party member, war battle member or provide services to your castle (shop, blacksmith, etc). All the games are about slowly building an army and a castle. The grafics are not great, but the stories are very mature with themes of war and loss.
Tryed again a few years later and it became one of my favorite games of all time. I started with Suikoden V, played half an hour and returned it because I didn't like the visuals and battle system.
